Review:
Herbie Hancock’s enthusiasm and playful creativity is at its height in this 1984 recording of a truly outstanding trio featuring, in addition to Herbie Hancock (piano), Ron Carter (bass) and Billy Cobham (drums). The rapport with Ron Carter would be expected (and is indeed delivered) after their years together in Miles Davis’ second great quintet, but it is the shared pleasure in playing with Billy Cobham that really comes over in Herbie Hancock’s playing. Those who admire Billy Cobham’s work with John McLaughlin and later with his own bands on albums such as “Spectrum” will not be surprised how perceptive and subtle he is in this more straight ahead trio setting. The result is a concert of driving invention with rich textures, alternating bold outpourings and quiet contemplations.
As always the highlights centre on Herbie Hancock’s virtuosity and creativity. A long, unaccompanied version of “Dolphin Dance” is one of the finest pieces he has ever produced while his playing with the trio on “Speak Like A Child”, “Eye Of The Hurricane” and “Little Waltz” is outstanding.
If you are interested in jazz technique on piano, bass or drums, this recording may be of special interest since there is a long and absorbing solo from each of the musicians with superb, revealing camera work showing off the expertise and deft touch of these jazz masters. Recommended.
