The Complete Tony Bennett / Bill Evans Recordings cover

This re-released and remastered album brings together "The Tony Bennet / Bill Evans Album" from 1975 and the follow up album "Together Again" from 1976 and adds a wealth of material from alternate takes from the two sessions, all on a budget price 2-CD set.

Tony Bennett and Bill Evans had first met in March 1962 on the bill of a jazz party on the White House lawn organized by President Kennedy. Bill Evans later paid a warm tribute to Tony Bennett's talent:

"Like many instrumentalists, I never was much of a vocal fan. But Tony's development has been fantastic, and for the past few years he's been my favorite singer…..(His singing) has a depth and a quality and a purity that appeal to me."

The idea of recording together an album of duets was suggested by jazz singer and Tony Bennett friend Annie Ross on hearing the Bill Evans Trio playing at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London in the early 1970s. But it was not until 1975 that the first recording date was set up in San Francisco. They worked improvisationally, with no pre-planned song list, suggesting songs to each other and working up the arrangements in the studio. The result is a spontaneity and directness of approach that is the reward for risk taking in this way.

Tony Bennett later told Will Friedwald, his biographer and the author of the extensive, excellent new liner notes to the album: "….. the best records I ever made are the duos with Ralph Sheron and Bill Evans. We just went in there at two thirty in the morning and went to work. Just piano and voice, that's all we needed."

There is a wealth of music here in what is clearly one of the best vocal jazz albums ever recorded.
