You could be forgiven for thinking that vibes player Joe Locke had gone for a "Bird With Strings" approach but the good news is that the 'strings' in question are guitar from Jonathan Kreisberg and bass from Jay Anderson with added drums from Joe La Barbera – a tight quartet with not a symphonic instrument in sight.
The five Joe Locke original, mainly modal, compositions showcase the understanding between all four musicians, from the upfront "Appointment in Orvieto" and "The Rosario Material" to the more downhome "A Word Before You Go", the atmospheric "Sword of Whispers" or the samba-tinged "Terzani".
Bassist Jay Anderson's "Time Like The Present" gives a surefooted start to the album while drummer Joe La Barbera's "Sixth Sense", an angular blues, draws the album to a close with tilts towards Americana.
On the way, there are laid back, late night takes on Cole Porter's "All Of You" and Julie Styne's "I Fall In Love Too Easily".
Overall, this is a very accomplished session, highlighting Joe Locke's recognition as the current leading jazz vibes player and Jonathan Kreisberg's continuing emergence as a rising jazz guitar talent.
