John Scofield tries yet an other route beyond the post-bop that he is so good at. Here he takes on the music of Ray Charles and produces some well delivered takes on the great soul singer's classics ("Busted", "I Can't Stop Loving You", Georgia On My Mind", "Hit The Road Jack"........). Guest vocalists include Dr. John, Warren Haynes, Mavis Staples, Aaron Neville and John Mayer. Use of vocals is a first for Sco and a sure sign that the new young pop inspired jazz singers are having a widely felt effect on the whole jazz scene. More mainstream than many a Sco album but fun nevertheless. A great tribute to Ray and the kind of album that should get interest rising in Sco's extensive and brilliant back catalogue.
